Before you head off on summer adventures be sure to complete this junior checklist.

Finalize Your Senior Schedule

Colleges look to admit students who have been actively engaged in academics and are at their educational prime. To demonstrate your determination and diligence your senior schedule of classes should be your most rigorous to date.

An appropriately challenging and well balanced course load including a foreign language will go a long way in the college admission process. Consult with your high school counselor, your current teachers, your parents and perhaps even a college admission representative to create the best possible schedule.

Schedule a College Appointment with Your Counselor

Continue to conduct your college search using tools such as Naviance to generate a tentative list; begin exploring websites of Colleges and Universities that you are interested in applying to. If possible, try to visit as many of the schools on your list as you can. It is important to have a balance of reach, target and likely schools on your list. Schedule an appointment with your counselor to grow your list, ask questions specific to you and learn more about creating a balanced list.

Ask for Teacher Recommendations

Most colleges require two teacher recommendations from core academic subjects. This provides an opportunity for the admissions committee to learn more about your academic abilities beyond your grades and standardized test scores. Select two teachers who you feel know you best and ask them if they would be willing to a write a letter on your behalf.

Schedule Summer Plans

While time to rest, relax and rejuvenate should be on your summer to do list you also want to make it a productive summer. Colleges want to know how you spend your time and that includes summer vacation. Whether your plans include a  work, community service, an internship, camp, classes, or travel it is time to spring into action.
